December 2010

One of our Australian forum members, TrAJik let us know that his iPhone alarm failed to wake him up this morning, January 1, 2011 (Australia time) and doing a quick look around the web it seems like he is not alone.

The iPhone had trouble with repeating alarms back during the change to Standard Time so this could be the same bug rearing its ugly head again. If it is the same workaround should be possible:

The key thing to note about this bug is that it does not affect one-time alarms. So if you have a recurring alarm that wakes you up for work each morning, change the repeat interval to “never”. It’s very frustrating to need to set the alarm every day, but it’s the only option until Apple releases a software fix.

iOS 4.2 fixed it before. Will we have to wait for an iOS 4.3 this time? If you’re experiencing the problem and if you’ve found any other fixes, let us know in the comments below or help trouble shoot in our iPhone Forums.

I’ve been meaning to setup a Facebook page for this site for quite a while. Last night I finally got round to it. So whenever you have a few minutes to spare I hope you’ll take a look at the new Just Another iPad Blog Facebook page, here:

title="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Just-Another-iPad-Blog/130802516983280" href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/Just-Another-iPad-Blog/130802516983280">http://www.facebook.com/pages/Just-Another-iPad-Blog/130802516983280

I should add that I’m an absolute novice at these pages, so please fire away with suggestions on what you’d like to see on the Facebook page. I’ve opened a discussion topic on the page for that, or just let me know any ideas in the comments here.

Wow this year flew by. It’s been a great year though.

Apple took loads of heat earlier this year due to the issues surrounding the iPhone 4 so-called ‘Death Grip’ which causes the signal strength to plummet when the phone is held a certain way. Apple replied by saying that all smartphones suffer from this issue to a certain degree, a point that HTC notably took issue with.

Unfortunately for Apple, the popularity of their products put a huge red target on their backs, and the fact that they didn’t properly own up to the issues didn’t help them much either.

But that’s not the end of this story. Now, another popular phone manufacturer, HTC, is caught in the middle of a similar controversy with their flagship Windows Phone 7, the HTC HD7…

According to a recent Fortune report, the latest estimates put iPad sales for 2010 at around the 14 million mark. These estimates include actual figures for most of this year and estimates from a broad range of analysts for the most recent quarter.

A pretty great debut year – especially considering that many thought the iPad would struggle as a ‘tweener’ sort of device and might just about sell a million in its first year.

Next year’s numbers, for iPad and tablets in general, are expected to see enormous growth.

On January 2nd, 2010, I wrote a post titled 10 predictions for the iPhone in 2010. Just like the title of the post suggested, I shared with you some of my predictions for the iPhone in this year that is about to end.

Lots of fun iPad 2 rumors flying round this week. Some of the latest I’ve seen – href="http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/everythingicafe-the-show/id403424132">here and href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/12/29/apple_to_add_usb_port_to_next_generation_ipad_rumor.html">here and href="http://www.9to5mac.com/44921/ipad-2-mold-back-camera-tapered-edges-new-side-port">here for instance – talk about things like:

  • a USB port
  • a new, mystery port on the left side of the device
  • tapered sides and a flat back ala the iPod Touch
  • a back camera
  • a slightly lighter iPad

I very much like the sound of a little bit lighter iPad – nothing crazy, just a tad less heavy would be nice. I also like the idea of the flat back. A camera or cameras feels like a given to me and the rest of the above doesn’t move me much.

How about you? Any must-haves on that little list? Or any you hate the sound of?

How to easily crop photos on your iPhone

Ever wish you could easily crop a photo right on your iPhone? Well, if speed is more important than resolution you can. We’ll show you how after the break!

Here’s how to easily crop a picture on your iPhone (or iPod touch or iPad):

  1. Tap on the Photo app
  2. Tap on Camera Roll (or one of your Photo Albums)
  3. Tap on the picture you want to crop
  4. Use pinch to zoom to expand the photo until just the part you want to keep is filling the screen
  5. Take a screenshot

That’s it! Your cropped photo is now saved to the Camera Roll! Sure it’s lost some megapixels (down to 960×640 on an iPhone 4 or iPod touch 4, or 480×320 on older devices) but it’s fast and perfect for on screen viewing or sharing via email or MMS.

If you have any questions or any other cool photo tips to share, leave them in comments!

[Thanks to Brian for sending this in, and his adorable son Dean for modeling! And since we hadn't thought of this one before, we'll be sending a reward -- an iPhone case! -- your way!]

Tips of the day will range from beginner-level 101 to advanced-level ninjary. If you already know this tip, keep the link handy as a quick way to help a friend. If you have a tip of your own you’d like to suggest, add them to the comments or send them in to dailytips@tipb.com. (If it’s especially awesome and previously unknown to us, we’ll even give ya a reward…)

The Dev Team just released RedSn0w 0.9.7b4, the latest version of their untethered jailbreak, which let me remind you, is still in beta. This updated version of RedSn0w brings the untethered jailbreak to your iPhone 4, iPad, and iPod Touch 4G for those of you on iOS 4.2.1.

The major improvement in this update is that you no longer need to run usbmux, which was very confusing for many of you (oh yeah, me included)… Read More
