Gameloft set to make iPhone, iPad games epically Unreal!

Gameloft has announced that they’ll be bringing Epic’s pixel-popping 3D rendering engine, Epic Unreal 3, to four iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad titles:

Gameloft penned a long-term, multi-platform licensing agreement with Epic Games, Inc. Whew! This agreement enables Gameloft to incorporate Unreal Engine 3 in four new games, two to be released in 2011 and two in 2012.

So which Gameloft games do you want to see get the Unreal treatment? NOVA, Asphalt, Modern Combat, Dungeon Hunter… or something new?

ShareYourInformationPrompt

The App Store’s new subscription policy has stirred up a lot of controversy and criticism since it was announced – with many publishers and others feeling that Apple’s 30% cut is too steep for this sort of App Store purchase and that Apple is being greedy at the risk of losing apps and developers.

It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out and whether Apple need to adjust the policy going forward.

In the meantime, here’s a quick screencap that shows one very good thing about the new subscriptions policy. When you subscribe to a publication, you are prompted on whether or not you will allow the publisher access to your information. Just in case you can’t read the screenshot, here’s the full text of the prompt:

Share Your Information?

The developer would like your name, email, and zip code so they can send you messages about related products in accordance with their privacy policy.

And of course you can choose to allow this or not. Good stuff. Publishers have been sharing people’s info with all sorts of junk mail marketers for years without ever offering an easy opt-out. This should help to stop them doing the same thing to our inboxes that they’ve done to our mailboxes for years.

iPadusedforPilotCharts

Wired is reporting today on the iPad gaining approval to be used by pilots to replace paper charts.

After three months of testing, the FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) has authorized an airline charter company, Executive Jet Management, to use the iPad as an approved alternative to paper charts.

This sounds like it should be quite a popular change with the company’s pilots …

From the earliest days of aviation, pilots have relied upon paper maps to help find their way. Even in an era of GPS and advanced avionics, you still see pilots lugging around 20 pounds or more of charts. But those days are numbered, because maps are giving way to iPads.

Executive Jet Management will be using iPads in tandem with a custom map app developed by an aviation chartmaker called Jeppesen.

Apple is reportedly testing an Android-like lockscreen for the next major version of iOS. Google’s Android OS has a gesture-based “dots” lockscreen that allows users to unlock their phone by highlighting the dots in a pre-established pattern.

Apparently, Apple is borrowing from Android’s lockscreen concept and including it in a future version of iOS. There have been complaints that the current iOS lockscreen is not secure enough, and there have been numerous ways of bypassing the iPhone’s 4-digit password…

Picture the scenario: Somebody with the default iPhone ringtone gets a phone call in a room full of other iPhone users. Everyone instantly reaches into their pocket and awkwardly looks around the room wondering who’s iPhone is actually going off.

We’ve all been there.

If you feel like pulling a good prank, there’s a website that replicates the iPhone’s default sounds.

SellingPoweroftheiPad

GigaOM has a great infographic post up, based on striking numbers extracted from a new report by Yudu Media. According to GigaOM the new report …

presents a very convincing case that when it comes to marketing and audience, few devices (tablets or otherwise) can compare with the iPad. The report collects the findings of a number of different surveys and research outlets, painting a picture of a device tailor-made to sell content, products and services.

Two of the numbers that jump off the page for me are these:

– 91% of iPad owners have downloaded at least one app – and 63% have downloaded a paid app.

– 50% of iPad owners read newspapers (on the iPad presumably) – and only 14% of other ‘E-Reader’ owners do.
