November 2011

Apple is feeling generous these days, so take advantage of it while it lasts. Just like it did not too long ago with Jetpack Joyride, Apple is currently giving away promo codes for another hit game, Where’s My Water, the Disney app that usually sells for .99 in the App Store.

All you have to do is to go to Apple’s Facebook page, ‘like’ it, and get a promo code to redeem the app in the App Store…(…)

It looks like Christmas came early for Samsung this year. Gizmodo is reporting that an Australian court has overturned the injunction against the Korean company which banned it from selling its popular Galaxy tablet on the continent.

The ban is the result of an ongoing world-wide patent dispute between the two companies and has been in place since late Summer. But apparently Samsung made a good case in its appeal it filed last week because the injunction has been lifted…(…)

Android has its own Siri, at least that is what the creators of Cluzee would like you to believe. The new app is even called your “intelligent personal assistant,” and Cluzee tries to mimic many features that Siri users will recognize, including the ability to dictate text in emails and set up appointments using natural, everyday language.

Cluzee is a third party service for Android, meaning that it isn’t backed by Google. The service looks to work exactly like Siri, but the voice commands that Cluzee recognizes are much more limited than Apple’s technology.(…)

Apps make our smartphones do some amazing things. They can turn your handset into a price scanner, park your car, and even cure your headache. Now we’re going to take a look at one that can help you tell if you’re sick or not.

The iTriage app for the iPhone is a complete digital first aid kit. After entering in your symptoms, the software gives you a possible diagnosis, and suggests treatments. And if that’s not enough, it can point you to the nearest doctor…(…)

iAWriterandDropbox

iA Writer – one of the best writing apps for the iPad – has been updated today, to Version 1.4.

The two big changes in this update are the support for Dropbox folders and iCloud support. You can now add a new Dropbox folder directly from within iA Writer – so you are no longer forced to save all your documents to the /Writer folder.

This update also adds Dropbox online editing and some unspecified ‘fixes and enhancements’.

As far as the iCloud support goes, so far I find it clumsy and of almost no use. When I choose to save a file to iCloud in the iPad app, I don’t see it all from the Mac version of Writer. Likewise, when I move a document to iCloud in the Mac version of Writer (because you cannot save directly to iCloud) it does not show up in the iPad version of Writer.

The Beatles The Ultimate Album by Album Guide for iPad

Rolling Stone magazine is planning to release an ‘iPad companion app’ version of  its ‘The Beatles: The Ultimate Album-by-Album Guide’ book this week in the iPad App Store.

The book was published this summer and this app will be Rolling Stone’s first entry into the App Store. It’s said to be priced at .99, and is set for release this Thursday, December 1. Here’s a little more about the app’s content:

The app contains the same content as the print book and has 122 pages with over 60 photos. However, it was redesigned for the iPad and as such, is not considered a “digital replica.” In addition the app contains 30 second sound samples (via iTunes) for every song and the ability to purchase each song through iTunes.

It also features interviews from Jim James of My Morning Jacket, James Taylor, Stevie Nicks, Liz Phair, Steven Van Zandt, Liam Gallagher, Stephen Malkmus of Pavement, Colin Meloy of the Decemberists, Graham Nash, Bob Weir and others, as well as a guide to the best non-album tracks.

I like a handful of Beatles songs, but I’ve never been a huge fan. Even so, I’ll likely give this app a look when it’s released as this is another genre of iPad app I’m interested in. I’m not a huge Sting fan, but I was impressed with the Sting 25 ‘appumentary’ app that I recently reviewed.

Have we got any Beatles fans here? Will you be tempted to buy this app?

Earlier we told you about the update to TouchPad, a VNC remote control app for iOS devices. It’s a well known app in itself, but this latest update is sure to make a few people ecstatic.

Indeed, Edovia — the highly esteemed developers behind this and other great apps, like Screens — has updated TouchPad to allow Siri dictation between an iPhone 4S and a Mac, Windows, or even Linux machine if that suits your fancy.

Check out our video demonstration inside…(…)
