January 2012

It’s a big day for Corona. After being href="http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/01/31/corona-fix-ibooks/">updated this morning to fix the DRM issues in iBooks, Saurik just tweeted that the untether has been updated yet again, this time to resolve problems with the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.

If you’re having problems with iBooks on your jailbroken device, you can install href="http://www.idownloadblog.com/tag/corona/">Corona directly from Cydia. If you’ve already installed Corona, you can simply update it via Cydia and you should be good to go.

Austin

The City of Austin is putting a ‘fleet of iPads’ and the FileMaker Go app to work to help streamline exhibitors management at the Austin Convention Center. As Apple Insider reports, the city has been able to deploy specialized apps based on the FileMaker database software …

… Austin’s database administrator Jeff Moore outlined how his group is using FileMaker Go to turn work order forms in their billing system into a touch-driven iPad app that allows employees to navigate orders and floor diagrams for city’s convention center.
The mobile app for iPad has improved employees’ productivity by giving them up to date information for clients and exhibitors operating in the Austin Convention Center

The Austin Convention Center is home to the upcoming annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive, Music and Film conference and festival.

Moore also said the iPad initiative is providing a 200 percent return on investment. I’m very glad to see the iPad at work in my hometown, and doing good work for the home of SXSW.

Foxconn plans to build five additional iPad production plants in Brazil

Apple’s largest production partner, Foxconn, has plans to build five new production plants in Brazil to help support the growing demand for the iPad tablet.

Officials from Foxconn and the Brazilian government will reportedly meet following the Chinese New Year to decide on where the factories will be built, but São Paulo is said to be pushing heavily for the investment. [...] In addition to helping supply Apple with iPads, the factories will be tooled for notebook and general electronics production. [...] A Foxconn representative declined to confirm its Brazilian expansion plans to Economia, calling the report “pure speculation.”

This news comes shortly after iPad production in Brazil got a generous tax break from local government following Foxconn reportedly investing up to 0 million in a São Paulo factory. The new production facilities could house up to 1,000 employees each, with officials from Foxconn and the Brazilian government said to be meeting after the Chinese New Year in order to make a final decision on the desired location.

With Apple selling through over 15 million iPads during Q1 2012, increasing production to help meet future demand is a no-brainer. And although Brazilian-made iPads may be a little behind schedule, adding more facilities to the mix can only help the situation in terms of availability.

China Telecom aiming to launch iPhone 4S in February

Beijing Telecom, a subsidiary of China Telecom, has announced that they’re aiming to release the iPhone 4S by the beginning of March, and that the final regulatory certifications just made it through on Monday. As you might guess,  iPhone launches in the area can get a little crazy, but with wider carrier availability, maybe the congestion and panic will let up a bit. Currently, the iPhone 4S is only available on China Unicom, though there have been hints that China Mobile will enjoy the next-gen iPhone.

It’s interesting to hear more about the retail side of the iPhone in China, since the vast majority of news from that corner of the world revolves around Apple’s manufacturing partner, Foxconn.  I’m sure by this point, Apple’s retail presence isn’t sullied by knock-off stores anymore, even though there’s still plenty of copycat devices floating around.

There’s no pricing information available for the CDMA-based iPhone 4S on China Telecom, but something tells me a steep pricetag won’t deter the locals from snatching ‘em up.

Export

Photogene for iPad, one of the more capable photo editing / effects apps for the iPad, has had a major update this week, to Version 3.3.

One of the most notable new features is support for exporting images to Evernote and Tumblr (adding to a strong range of existing options like Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, Dropbox, Picasa and more). There’s also a new device-to-device transfer capability if you have Photogene installed on another iOS device. Unfortunately this uses Bluetooth rather than WiFi.

The update also adds some new editing tools – including a new Clarity Slider and Clone tool – and this very cool sounding feature:

Copy edit operations from one photo and apply the same edits on another photo. Long-tap on the photo in the edit screen to copy&paste edits.

Here’s the full list of what’s new in this latest version of Photogene for iPad:

New: order directly from Photogene real photo products that will be delivered to you by mail. Service by tap2print.
New sharing options:
- Device-to-device: transfer photos directly to another iPad/iPhone (requires Photogene to be installed on the other device).
- Evernote.
- Tumblr.
- Now it’s possible to preserve the original file names when uploading to Dropbox, FTP or mail (requires iOS 5).
- Add date-stamp to your exported photos.
New edit tools:
- Clarity slider.
- Clone tool.
- Can now make collages even if location-services are turned off.
- Copy edit operations from one photo and apply the same edits on another photo. Long-tap on the photo in the edit screen to copy&paste edits.
Bug fixes:
- Fixed problem that the app loaded very slowly on devices with large photo libraries.
- Fixed pixilation issues that occurred with some types of jpeg files.

Photogene for iPad is already one of the best photo editing apps for iPad, and it’s great to see its developers continuing to update it with impressive new features.

Here’s an App Store link for Photogene for iPad; it’s priced at .99.

Apple has just released an update to Final Cut Pro X, their executive video editing software suite, which adds multi-camera syncing and broadcast monitoring suport. Final Cut Pro X 10.0.3 also includes enhanced XML, so it can talk with third-party plug-ins more easily. As always, there’s a bunch of great audio, animation, and color correction tools in there which professionals have come to rely on.

So, okay, okay, maybe Final Cut Pro X is a little overkill for something shot on your iPhone 4S, especially with iMovie available right on the device, but if you’re knee-deep in the Apple lifestyle, maybe you like adding an extra layer of polish to your mobile videos. Or if you just shot your new music video with a four iPhone setup and need that new multi-cam sync. (Hey, it happens!)

Even though Final Cut Pro X is clearly built for, well, pros, it’s still interesting to see some people kit out their iPhones with all manner of video-enhancing accessories. While I can’t speak much to the quality of those videos versus something done with a “real” camera, I still admire folks who try to close the gap. A full-blown version of Final Cut Pro X on iPad — even the iPad 3 is still the stuff of legend, but I’d love to see a bunch of mobile companion apps to enhance desktop publishing. Adobe’s done a lot of stuff like this, and I think a similar strategy for Apple would be a great way to keep an iPad in the workflow. Even if Apple doesn’t take up the call, maybe the enhanced XML support will enable third parties to make some cool iPad companion apps for Final Cut Pro X. There are just so many separate panes and menus to keep in order when editing video, that it would be nice to shunt a few of the less vital ones to a separate display. Full press release after the jump.

CUPERTINO, California—January 31, 2012—Apple® today released Final Cut Pro® X v10.0.3, a significant update to its revolutionary professional video editing application, which introduces multicam editing that automatically syncs up to 64 angles of video and photos; advanced chroma keying for handling complex adjustments right in the app; and enhanced XML for a richer interchange with third party apps and plug-ins that support the fast growing Final Cut Pro X ecosystem. Available today as a free update from the Mac® App Store™, Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 also includes a beta of broadcast monitoring that supports Thunderbolt devices as well as PCIe cards.

Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 includes a collection of groundbreaking new tools for editing multicam projects. Final Cut Pro X automatically syncs clips from your shoot using audio waveforms, time and date, or timecode to create a Multicam Clip with up to 64 angles of video, which can include mixed formats, frame sizes and frame rates. The powerful Angle Editor allows you to dive into your Multicam Clip to make precise adjustments, and the Angle Viewer lets you play back multiple angles at the same time and seamlessly cut between them.

Final Cut Pro X builds upon its robust, one-step chroma key with the addition of advanced controls including color sampling, edge adjustment and light wrap. You can tackle complex keying challenges right in Final Cut Pro X, without having to export to a motion graphics application, and view your results instantly with realtime playback.

In the seven months since launch, the third party ecosystem around Final Cut Pro X has expanded dramatically. XML-compatible software like DaVinci Resolve and CatDV provide tight integration for tasks such as color correction and media management. The new 7toX app from Intelligent Assistance uses XML to import Final Cut Pro 7 projects into Final Cut Pro X. In addition, some of the industry’s largest visual effects developers, including GenArts and Red Giant, have developed motion graphics plug-ins that take advantage of the speed and real-time preview capabilities of Final Cut Pro X.

Broadcast monitoring in Final Cut Pro X is currently in beta and allows you to connect to waveform displays, vectorscopes, and calibrated, high-quality monitors to ensure that your project meets broadcast specifications. Final Cut Pro X supports monitoring of video and audio through Thunderbolt I/O devices, as well as through third party PCIe cards.

Pricing & Availability Final Cut Pro X v10.0.3 is available from the Mac App Store for 9.99 (US) to new users, or as a free update for existing Final Cut Pro X customers. A 30-day free trial of Final Cut Pro X is available at www.apple.com/finalcutpro/trial. Full system requirements and more information on Final Cut Pro X can be found at www.apple.com/finalcutpro.

href="http://www.idownloadblog.com/2011/12/02/why-piracy-hurts-jailbreak-community/">App piracy is something which is a real problem for many iOS developers, especially the smaller, independent ones. Things don’t get much easier for the big guys, either.

Rovio, the people behind href="http://www.idownloadblog.com/tag/angry-birds/">Angry Birds, also suffer from a spot of piracy, and not just of the app variety, either. All sorts of merchandise is being made and sold in Asia, with Rovio getting nothing by way of monetary compensation. But that doesn’t seem to bother Rovio’s CEO Mikael Hed.

In fact, he seems to be surprisingly happy about it…(…)

Apple has finally caught up with the huge demand for the iPhone 4S. For the first time since its launch way back in October, all models of the iPhone 4S are now shown as in stock.

No matter which model you go for, 16GB, 32GB or 64GB or which carrier you choose from AT&T, Verizon or Sprint, they are all in stock. Even the unlocked and contract free models too.

Instapaper

Instapaper, the superb offline reading app for iPad and iOS, has been updated recently – to Version 4.0.2.

One of the most notable additions in this update is new subscription options – you can now purchase subscriptions in 3,6, or 12 month intervals. Becoming a subscriber not only supports the development of this excellent app, but also brings the following benefits:

      • Search all articles in your account.
      • Ability to use third-party Instapaper API apps.
      • Higher Kindle article limits and a “Send to Kindle” bookmarklet to send any page immediately.
      • Higher RSS-feed limits and faster feed updates.
      • An option to hide Instapaper’s ads.

For me, just the search capability is well worth the small cost of a subscription ( a dollar per month) – so it’s nice to see more subscription length options.

The remainder of the change list for Instapaper Version 4.0.2 is as follows:

- Faster updates and startup
- Images now work with VPNs and proxies
- New Subscription page in Settings shows remaining duration and renewal options
- Added Summly and Due to Share panel, and added Definition to dictionary popups, when their respective apps are installed
- Added support for the "Speak Selection" accessibility feature in iOS 5
- Fixed miscellaneous interface shortcomings

I should note that I don’t actually see subscription information mentioned above in Settings.

Here’s an App Store link for Instapaper; it’s priced at .99.

Notification Center on iPad

Notification Center is one of the headline features in iOS 5. It’s a major improvement to how notifications were previously delivered in iOS and it works wonderfully well on the iPad. It lets you see all your notifications in one clear list view, and it’s instantly available with just a quick swipe gesture from anywhere on the iPad.

For those of your who are newer to the iPad or iOS 5, or even just to notifications on the iPad, here are a few handy little tips for working with Notification Center:

How To Open and Close Notification Center on the iPad

– To open Notification Center from any of your home screens or any app that displays the status bar, just swipe down from anywhere on the status bar. If you’re in a full-screen app that doesn’t show the status bar, you swipe down from anywhere at the very top of the page (on the bezel of the iPad) and you’ll see a little set of bars pop up in the middle of the screen at the top – tap and swipe down on those to invoke Notification Center.

– To close Notification Center you look for the same set bars at the bottom center of the Notification Center view, and tap and swipe up
