The iPhone 4G – Was Christmas Ruined?

It was a bit like discovering your Christmas presents in the top of the wardrobe, ripping the wrapping paper to shreds, gorging on the chocolate, exhausting the novelty of the long-awaited toys and trying to piece the whole gruesome mess back together with the remaining sticky tape. Then getting told off by a gigantic Apple. (Stay with me…) So, Christmas morning, your parents try to fix grins on their faces while you all pretend that you are really a grateful, darling child and your forced exclamations of “Wow! Just what I wanted!” fall cold and empty…

HYPOTHETICALLY, I mean. That’s a bit like what it feels to have the iPhone 4G “finally” revealed. Um, that’s really great, Steve, thanks. Never seen it before, honest, never in our lives, certainly not 2 whole months before the big reveal. Still, there’s something kinda ironic about the 4G tagline: “This changes everything. Again.”

Anywho, on June 7th 2010, Apple CEO Steve Jobs introduced the newest member of the iPhone family in his keynote address at the WWDC, claiming that “for 2010, we’re going to be taking the biggest leap since the original iPhone,” but adding, with good grace, “Stop me if you’ve seen this before…”

The reveal covered eight of the “hundreds” of new features, including:

New, slimline design – at 9.3mm thick it is reportedly 24% thinner than the 3Gs
Front facing camera for “facetime” conference calling
Integrated wireless antenna, wifi, bluetooth & GPS
Back facing 5MP camera and 720p HD video, with iMovie available as an app for editing
3.5″ retina display screen with 960×640 pixel resolution – 4x the pixel count of previous models
Improved battery time – 7 hours of talk time and 6 hours of web browsing (on 3G networks), 10 hours of wifi browsing, 10 hours of video and 40 hours of music.
Available in 16GB and 32GB versions from 24th June 2010 in the US, UK, Japan, France and Germany (pre-orders start on 15th June) and by the end of September it will be obtainable in 88 countries

Apple has also previewed the newest version of the iPhone operating system, OS 4.0, to be launched in the summer of this year. The system is boasting multitasking capabilities for third party applications, giving greater freedom to flick between programs and apps, to listen to music while you web browse or check info while you chat. 4.0 also integrates the iPad’s bookstore into the iPhone, the option of encrypted email and opens up opportunities for developers to place ads within applications – potentially a massive new platform for mobile marketing.

So the question is: have the iPad, the iPhone 4G and OS 4.0 improved Apple’s universe enough to compete with the tsunami of Android-lovers on the horizon? Was the blow of the reveal softened too much by Gizmodo’s plot spoiler? Would things really be better sorted out if we just resorted to the Jobs vs Cutts fight club like we suggested in the first place? Perhaps. The first rule of the iPhone 4G is… you don’t talk about the iPhone 4G before it’s launched…

Ars at WWDC 2010: hands on, pics of the new iPhone 4
The Ars team got our hands on a new iPhone 4 immediately after the WWDC keynote Monday and checked out some of the new features as well as the new physical design. The phone definitely feels good in the hand—not slippery like the original iPhone, but the same squared-off hand-feel that you don’t get with the 3G or 3GS. We weren’t sure if we’d like the look of the glass back, but after having …

The Second Coming of the Iphone

Last year the gadget world was awash with one word, iPhone.  Apple who typically made high-end home computer with their iMacs and Macbook laptops they carved out a decent niche for themselves amongst graphic designers and Photoshop professionals the world over.  But much like their rivals Microsoft they realised that they needed to diversify and having catered for the desktop computer market and the laptop market they looked to taking on the ultra-portable market with mobile phones.

The first iPhone went on sale in America on June 29th 2007 and thousands flocked to Apple stores in the States to get the latest gadget from Apple.  Once the dust settled the nay-sayers chimed in, it turned out that a lot of features that most other mobile phones from companies like Nokia and SonyEricsson were strangely missing in the iPhone.  These features included a good quality camera, MMS messaging and 3G data.

Whilst some of the missing features were reinstated through later firmware updates the lack of 3G data speeds was the point many were annoyed with despite free Wi-Fi and unlimited data with UK partner O2 it gave the impression that the iPhone was behind the times before it had even come out.

One other factor that affected UK sales was that the contracts you had to sign up to were excessive compared to usual mobile phone purchases, you had to pay similar prices for an iPod for the handset and then upwards of £50 per month on an 18 month contract.  In the UK we are used to paying little to nothing for the phone of our choice as they are normally subsidised by the network.

Whilst it enjoyed some success the iPhone is far from perfect and is understandable since it was the company’s first outing in the mobile phones market.  Due for announcement at the WWDC conference in June is the next iteration of the iPhone, dubbed the 3G iPhone as it will now sport the faster data speeds people are used to.  Among other speculations are a second front facing camera to enable video conferencing and a sleeker black colour scheme.  The handset is likely to be slightly bulkier than the original iPhone but since it was slimmer than most mobile phones originally this shouldn’t be too much of a problem, especially compared to Nokia’s hefty N95.

The trouble is that once the phone is announced it will go on sale immediately in the United States of America and probably make its way across the pond in a few months as per the previous model.  The only concern here is that people who had bought the original are now locked into an 18 month contract which will only be just over half way completed; now the new and obviously more desirable model will be coming out and may leave early adopters a bit sour about the new model.

Whilst no one really knows the concrete details for the new model of the iPhone they won’t have long to wait as it will be shown off at the WWDC conference and no doubt have millions queuing up outside mobile phone stores all over again.

Get Everything to Know About API

Most individuals have a number of public profiles and blogs. But it can be tedious to make all the connections with all your contacts from one site to another. Enter the Social Graph API, which shows public connections between people. Programmers can use this data to come up with an “add friends” functionality. Publicly available information and relationships from indexed webpages are used for this API. The Google crawler looks for links indicating that a profile is a “friend” or “me”. Open standards like XFN (XHTML Friends Network) and FOAF (Friend Of A Friend) are used to show relationships. Test drive the example apps such as Site Connectivity, My Connections and Parameter Playground.

The Apple Worldwide Developers Conference slated on June 9th to 13th at Moscone West, San Francisco, promises to be the place to be for developers of everything Apple. They’re touting Mac OS X Leopard and iPhone OS as development platforms waiting for you to take full advantage of their capabilities. At the WWDC, the engineers behind them will show you what you can do. More than 150 sessions and labs are scheduled over the five days, plus lunchtime talks and the Apple Design Awards, and opportunities to meet fellow developers and IT professionals. Unfortunately, WWDC is sold out for attendees. The good news is that you can purchase session videos on iTunes in due time.

It’s impossible to ignore that so much is happening in San Francisco this month that we couldn’t help plugging another event . Here’s another one that’s more general, but asks the big questions like “where are we going?”. Geared toward tech people, business executives, investors and industry analysts, Supernova brings in the big names from IT and the academe to talk about the future of the industry and the implications of social media. It could be the place to meet the people who could take your garage-based API startup to new heights. Supernova will be held at Mission Bay Conference Center and Wharton West on June 16 to 18.
